Faculty of Engineering, Yogyakarta State University, Won Three Silver Medals and A Bronze Medal on ASEAN Barista and Latte Art Competition 2019

Students of Faculty of Engineering YSU won three silver medals and a bronze medal on ASEAN Barista and Latte Art Competition 2019. Muhammad Fikri Maulana and Rafi Johandy were two candidates from Food and Fashion Engineering Education Department (PTBB). They were attended to fight with four other countries. This prestigious event was organized by Star Championship and Universiti Tunn Hussein Onn Malaysia. The event was held on November 23 - November 27, 2019. International Collabs Student Malaysia was chosen as the competition arena for this event.

The competition was attended by four students from Indonesia, four from Singapore, three from Scotland, four from Malaysia, and three from China. Besides two YSU students, there were two students from Education University (UPI) as the representatives from Indonesia. A fierce competition occured to fight over the championship of two categories, including Expresso and Cappucino and Signature Drink.

Previously, PTBB YSU held a selection for one month. The selection was done selectively to get the best candidate. There were two stages of selection consisting of general and private selection. In the general selection, six candidates would be competed. Then in the private selection, two candidates were taken from the six previous candidates. The two selected candidates were then trained to face the competition. Besides the selection, Fikri and Rafi also took part in a training at a Barista courses in Maguwoharjo.

The competition lasted for two days. The first day was Expresso and Cappucino competition and the second day was Signature Drink competition. Prior to this, the participants were given education about the machine. There were five judges in this competition, which come from Malaysia and China. In the Expresso and Cappucino competition Muhammad Fikri Mulana and Rafi Johandy won two Silver Medals. Then in the Signature Drink competition Muhammad Fikri Mulana won the Bronze Medal and Rafi Johandy won the Silver Medal. While for the Gold Medal was won by Scotland and China.

Fikri explained that in the barista competition there were several materials being tested. The materials tested to the barista were expresso, cappuccino, and black coffee. As for the latte art was drawing on a cup of coffee with milk as the material. The milk must be foamed first. After that, the foam can be used to draw on coffee. Some assessment aspects from the jury included cleanliness, time, effectiveness, coffee presentation, taste level, use of tools, texture, and good coffee composition.

Fikri added, he joined this event because of an offer from one of his lecturers. In addition, the reason he was interested in joining this event was because it was in accordance with his passion. This was the first time for Fikri and Rafi. They said that they did not expect to win in their first experience. They also felt happy because they could be proud to their parents and YSU. (winarti)
